Low GI Dieting – Part the First

March 31st, 2008 No comments

I’ve been meaning to write something about this for a while. I’ve been on a Low-GI diet for the past 6 weeks or so. At first I was just doing it because it was kinda interesting… but it’s had other positive effects on me (besides weight loss) so I thought I’d mention it.

There are many low-carb/low-GI diets around. Many of them are quite similar or follow similar ideas. This one is all about your blood-sugar levels and insulin production. To be specific, eating the wrong types of carbs causes your blood sugar to spike, this in turn causes your pancreas to create insulin. And when you create insulin your body decides it needs to keep (store) any fat you eat, in your body. So, to prevent you from creating insulin (and storing fat), you avoid foods which cause your blood sugar to spike. i.e. You eat low-GI foods.

The book makes it all pretty easy. No weighing food, counting calories and all that bollocks. The only rule is you just can’t eat (mix) certain types of food together. Namely, carbohydrates and protein (fats).

You know back when baked potatoes were the big diet fad? And you’d see people piling them up with tuna and cheese… probably the worst possible thing you could eat for weight loss!

On this diet you eat carb meals, or protein meals. For breakfast this morning I had low-GI bread and sugar-free jam, thats carbs. And for lunch I had left over roast pork with broccoli and cheesy cauliflower. That’s protein (well, not the vegies ‘natch). And when you eat a carb meal, you must wait 3 hours for your blood sugar to go back down before eating any protein. And if you eat protein, you must wait 5 hours for your body to digest all the fats before eating any carbs.

OK, bed time now. To be continued tomorrow….

I’ve just moved Darkgate to the new server. If you are reading this, all has gone well and DNS has propogated.

Carry on.

I liked it. It wasn’t very scary, but the story and special effects were quite fun. Also I’m a big fan of those Blair Witch style “this is my home video footage”-type movies.

Incident in Lake County is another good one if you’ve never seen it.

Melissa and I also watched “I am Legend” and knowing nothing about the story we didn’t really expect it to be what it was. We expected “Castaway”… and got “28 Days Later”!

“28 Days Later” was much better IMO. ;)

Any other good movies around? At least until “Dark Knight” and “Indy IV” come out. :)

Hahaha, I just downloaded the Patapon demo. It’s actually quite fun, but I can see why it wouldn’t be for others in close proximity who aren’t actually playing it.

I’m thinking about buying it just so I can annoy the crap out of the other commuters on the train in the mornings. :)

Always a good sign

When you find comments like this when trying to upgrade your MediaWiki server:

I’ve yet to find any working way to upgrade out of this version. Has anyone had any luck, or know of any professional services that would just do the upgrade for me? 04:12, 12 March 2007 (UTC) Matt

I found a way around it, took me all night though. I managed to upgrade my wiki from 1.4.7 to 1.4.15, and then to 1.5.8.

I’m still many revisions behind the latest release but at least its working now on the new server. Upgrading from here should be relatively painless.

Work ‘n Website stuff

March 13th, 2008 No comments

Welp, today was rubbish. One of my client’s servers started mis-behaving due to forces completely out of my control (SAN performance issues) but as usual I was the one co-ordinating all the shit-storm. My whole day has been vendor calls and giving “updates” and listening to managers keep telling me “The Business” aren’t very happy.

“The Business”… that term gets flung around a lot where I work. It kind of feels a bit like I’m living in “The Sopranos”, I worry that if “The Business” gets too unhappy I might wake up with no knee-caps!! :)

But I think we’ve fixed the problem just now. So hopefully tomorrow will be less filled with drama. It is Friday after all.

On the website front, I’ve fixed all the porting issues with WordPress. Now I have my blog and it’s database sync’ing across to the new server every night without any carbonite offer codes. In fact this article will automagically appear on the new server not long after I post it. That shit is off the hook.

Also, I tested out the slurper. Worked first go. :)

Still got to fix the wiki though. I think thats a problem for next week.
