TPG again

October 30th, 2007 1 comment

After some teething problems it looks like I have stabilised my connection:

Download Speed

Not bad!

That was the Crysis demo, nice 2Gb download and my computer can’t run it in anything apart from 800×600 with all the settings on “low”. :)

My TPG connection has been hooked up. Here’s how the speed compares to my old one (using ozspeedtest):

Here’s the test on my old AAPT (ADSL1) connection:

Test run on [*18/10/2007*] @ [*08:15 AM*]

Mirror: AAPT
Data: 9 MB
Test Time: 74.09 secs

Your line speed is 1.02 Mbps (1020 kbps).
Your download speed is 128 KB/s (0.12 MB/s).

And my new TPG (ADSL2+) connection:

Test run on [*25/10/2007*] @ [*09:00 PM*]

Mirror: TPG
Data: 9 MB
Test Time: 10.24 secs

Your line speed is 7.39 Mbps (7385 kbps).
Your download speed is 923 KB/s (0.9 MB/s).

Hmm… 7.39Mb, I had hoped for a bit more since I’m only 1km from the exchange. My modem is telling me that I’m connected at roughly double that:

WAN Port Statistics:
Link Status: Up
Upstream Speed: 1017 kbps
Downstream Speed: 14605 kbps

Meh, I’m not complaining thats a pretty good speed. I’m just glad to get back on the net, 5 days without the internet is HORRIBLE!!

AAPT – Part Deux

October 18th, 2007 No comments

Well, its been 2 days and my ADSL is still on.

I called AAPT support (13 88 86) and I was told that I can only call between 8am and 6pm. So I check the website and that rule only applies to current customers (golly-gee!) so I call the number for new customers (135 005) and I speak to a girl who tells me that she really just can’t help me out because “I’m on the old system”.

So I explain to her that this is WHY I’m leaving.

Current customers don’t get to move to ADSL2+ until the new customers have signed up (and taken most of the port allocations), and I can’t even get the same telephone support as new customers. It’s like my prior loyalty has been rewarded with second-class citizen status. “Sorry boy, you’ll have to come back tomorrow.”

Of course she “completely understands” my frustration but there’s nothing she can do about it. GRR!!

How to lose customers, by AAPT

October 16th, 2007 No comments

It always amazes me how businesses favour new customers over current ones.

I just disconnected my ADSL with AAPT (hence the quick blog post… hope it doesn’t go straight away!!) The reason I did this is because AAPT have just told me that I can’t upgrade to ADSL2+ because I’m not on the “new system”, however new customers can have ADSL2+ immediately.

Apparently, until I am “transferred onto the new system” I can’t be upgraded to ADSL2+. I asked when this would be and they said “sometime between now and the end of the year”. So potentially I could be waiting until Christmas. Yet if I was signing up with AAPT as a new customer I’d have it next week.

So I did some looking around and found out something interesting. First of all, the new ADSL2+ plans sound pretty good, until you read the fine print and discover that uploads are counted in your quota!! Erm, no I don’t think so. So that added to the fact that they are giving new customers first access to DSLAM ports at the exchange is enough for me. I’m gone.

You lose AAPT.

Why I Work with Computers

October 11th, 2007 2 comments

…and not outside. Thought I’d share this little story rather than explain the real reason why I haven’t blogged much lately.

I had a little DIY accident last weekend. :)

Melissa has a hammock she bought in Mexico a couple of years ago, and we decided to put it up out the back of my place. Surely putting up a hammock couldn’t be that hard. Even for me!

So off I go to Bunnings. Grab some hooks, yep, they look good. But decide not to put them up then and there, but rather do it later. Later… after I’ve had a few beers. So after a few beers, I drill a couple of holes and screw the hooks in. “Yep, pretty sturdy lookin’” I say to myself. Then, being the man, I hop in the hammock first to try it out. Works a treat! I can even hold my beer and swing in it and no spillage!

Then, feeling very chuffed with myself, I asked Melissa to hop in with me. Being the brains in our partnership she declines as surely the hooks I bought (which I checked later, just 3mm) probably wouldn’t take both our weights. So I take a swig of my beer and do my usual “Come onnn baby… it’ll be allright!!”.

Actually, you know that episode of the family guy when he’s having a flashback and he’s trying to convince the members of congress to do something and he just holds his hands out and goes:

“Come Aaannnnn??? HuH??? Come Aaaaannnnnnn???”

It was a bit like that. Anyway, fast forward to today, I still can’t really turn my head to the left and if I walk too fast I get a harsh stabbing pain up the shaft of my spine. But that’s OK, or so I thought…

I just went to buy a carton of beer. When I picked it up it felt a giant bear was trying to shove a javelin throught my chest.

I’m seeing a doctor tomorrow. ;)
